Background and more detail
Employer cover is mandatory
Private employers must provide health insurance for expat employees and their registered dependents. The rules are set by the Council of Health Insurance. Your iqama cannot be issued or renewed without valid cover.
What the basic policy covers
- GP and specialist visits
- Hospital stays and surgery
- Maternity
- Emergency treatment
- Medication, with co-payments
Higher tiers add wider hospital networks and lower co-pays. Ask HR which class you are on.
Using it
Show your insurance card or iqama at network clinics. Book appointments through Sehhaty or the clinic's app. Emergency care must be given without delay.
Good to know
Dental and optical cover are limited on basic plans. Pre-existing conditions are covered, but chronic medication may need prior approval.
