Background and more detail
Leases
Leases in Qatar are usually for one year and must be registered with the Ministry of Municipality (lease attestation). Attestation is needed to sponsor family and connect utilities. Rent is often paid in monthly post-dated cheques.
Furnished or unfurnished
Many apartments are offered semi-furnished (kitchen appliances and air conditioning included). Fully furnished flats cost more but suit people on short contracts.
Popular areas
- The Pearl and Lusail: waterfront towers, higher rents
- West Bay: close to offices and the metro
- Al Sadd, Bin Mahmoud, Najma: central and more affordable
- Al Waab, Al Gharrafa: villas and compounds for families
What is included
Ask whether rent includes Kahramaa (electricity and water), internet and maintenance. Many compounds include all of these.
Housing allowances
Many employers provide accommodation or a housing allowance. Check whether the allowance is paid monthly or as an annual lump sum, since landlords often want cheques up front.
