Background and more detail
Key reforms
In 2020 Qatar removed the requirement for an exit permit for most workers and allowed employees to change jobs without a no-objection certificate from their employer. A non-discriminatory minimum wage applies to all workers, with additional minimums for food and housing if these are not provided.
Recruitment fees are illegal
Workers must not pay recruitment fees. If an agency in your home country asks for money, report it. Licensed agencies are listed by the Ministry of Labour.
The Qatar Visa Center
For many sending countries, the medical exam, fingerprints and contract signing happen at a Qatar Visa Center before you travel. The contract you sign there is registered electronically and is the binding one.
Wages
Salaries are paid through the Wage Protection System, which lets the ministry see late or missing payments. Keep payslips and bank statements.
Changing employer
You must give notice, usually one month in the first two years and two months after. The new employer applies for the transfer online.
Typical packages
Professional roles in Doha usually include housing or a housing allowance, transport, annual flight and medical cover through the public system or private insurance. There is no personal income tax.
