Moving to Dubai: Complete Relocation Guide
Everything you need to plan a move to Dubai, from entry permits and Emirates ID to housing, schools and setting up utilities.

In short
Your employer sponsors an entry permit, you complete a medical test and biometrics in the UAE, and you receive a residence visa linked to your Emirates ID. The process usually takes 2 to 4 weeks after you land, and you cannot open most bank accounts or sign a lease in your own name until it is done.

- Typical time
- 2–4 weeks after entry

Documents checklist
Do’s and don’ts
Do
- Install UAE Pass early – most government services need it
- Keep a scan of every document in one folder
- Check your MOHRE contract matches the offer letter salary
- Book the medical test the week you arrive
Don’t
- Don’t hand over your original passport – employers may not keep it by law
- Don’t enter on a tourist visa if your entry permit is ready
- Don’t let the Emirates ID expire – fines accrue daily
- Don’t start working before your permit is issued
Cost estimator
Untick what doesn't apply to you. These are rough figures and fees change often, so check with the authority.
Watch out
- Overstaying after cancellation is fined daily. You normally have a grace period after your visa is cancelled – confirm the current length with ICP.
- Fees change frequently. Always check the official ICP or GDRFA portal before paying.
Common questions
Can I sponsor my family?
Yes, with a minimum salary of roughly AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. You need a tenancy contract (Ejari) and attested marriage and birth certificates.
Can I change jobs?
Yes. Your new employer applies for a new work permit. Your current visa is cancelled and transferred without leaving the country in most cases.
What is the Golden Visa?
A 5 or 10 year self-sponsored residence for investors, property owners, high earners, specialists and top graduates. No employer is needed.

Background and more detail
Before you arrive
Most people relocate to Dubai with a job offer in hand. Your employer will normally apply for an entry permit, which you use to enter the UAE and complete the residence process within 60 days.
Prepare these documents in advance:
- Passport valid for at least six months
- Attested degree certificates (if your role requires them)
- Attested marriage and birth certificates for family sponsorship
- Passport photographs with a white background
The residence process
- Enter the UAE on your entry permit.
- Complete the medical fitness test at an approved centre.
- Provide biometrics for your Emirates ID.
- Your residence visa is issued electronically and linked to your Emirates ID.
Tip: Your Emirates ID is required for almost everything, including a bank account, a phone contract and a tenancy registration.
Finding a home
Rents are typically quoted per year. Landlords may ask for one to four cheques. Every tenancy must be registered with Ejari, which you also need to connect DEWA electricity and water.
Schools
Dubai has more than 200 private schools offering British, American, IB, Indian and other curricula. Inspection ratings from the KHDA are a useful starting point. Apply early: popular schools have waiting lists.
Healthcare
Health insurance is mandatory in Dubai and is provided by employers for employees. Check whether your policy covers dependents.
Getting around
The Dubai Metro, tram and buses use the Nol card. Many residents also drive; some nationalities can convert their home licence directly.
